Small town with Big Art!

From the archive, first published Tuesday 18th Apr 2006.

Cardigan has won a major art commission as part of Channel 4's £2m Big Art Project.

Prince Charles Quay has been chosen as one of six locations from over 1400 nominations across Britain. The town will now work with artists and curators to create its own public art commission.

The site was nominated by Cardigan's river project manager Jim Evans, who is delighted with the result. He said: "It's fabulous, and really exciting for everyone. It will be a significant piece of public art, and a major international artist could be commissioned."

Community involvement is an important aspect of the project. A liaison officer will work with the people of the town and different organisations such as the schools and town council to hear their ideas.

Mr Evans added: "This will really put Cardigan on the map. My whole raison d'être is to bring people into the town to spend money here. A piece of public art would be a launch pad to help bring economic activity to the area. People will come from all over to see it."

The final six locations were chosen from a shortlist of 12 sites. The other successful areas were Beckton Alps in East London, Waterworks Park in North Belfast, Burnley in north-west England, the Isle of Mull in Scotland and Sheffield Cooling Towers.

The piece will bring together various aspects of Cardigan's culture and history, such as the castle and the Eisteddfod, It will also link both sides of the river and represent the start of the Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion coastal paths.

A series of TV programmes will be shown in late 2007.
