Hard fought win

Division Four (West) Crymych 15 Pembroke 10

Crymych left wing Rhodri Thomas was the man of the moment at Parc Lloyd Thomas as he scored two tries, the second in the last 10 minutes to give his team a hard-fought win over Pembroke.

Thomas actually scored his first try after 35 seconds as centre Martin Jones fielded the kick-off, beat his marker deep in his own 22 and speeding up the left wing before switching inside for full back Carwyn Jones to maintain the move before No 8 Cennydd James joined the move and sent Thomas scurrying over in the right corner for as good a try as Crymych will score all season.

Pembroke responded with a penalty from outside half Geraint Lewis but Gareth Davies dropped a goal for Crymych before they were forced to endure a lengthy period of pressure in their left corner. A Pembroke try from a series of scrum 5s seemed a certainty but blind side flanker Matthew Williams was outstanding in the tackling stakes, closely followed by James, Richard Llewellyn and hooker Owain Williams.

They repelled the pressure and went close to scoring on two occasions but centre Wyn Jenkins was halted right on the line after good work by props Andrew Fletcher and Rob Davies, scrum half Barry Truslove, Carwyn Hones, Andrew Thomas.

Crymych had the breeze in their favour after the interval but it was Pembroke who snatched the lead when big centre Huw Purser charged up the middle and set up possession for flanker Neil Humphreys to put winger Geraint Jackson over in the right corner and Lewis added the extras with an excellent kick.

Crymych brought on fresh legs in hooker Gareth `Joey' Davies, Jason Nicholls at prop and Mark Oakman in the second row - and the ploy worked because a good spell of pressure resulted in Rhodri Thomas eluding several tackles on a twisting run to the line. Carwyn Jones slotted the wide-angled conversion as the bonus.
