Beach boost for village

From the archive, first published Tuesday 8th Nov 2005.

THE coveted Blue Flag could again fly over the beach at Tresaith next year, it was revealed this week.

The beach lost its top European status a year ago because water quality tests in 2004 were not up to the required guideline standards.

But new test results for summer 2005 show water quality at Tresaith is higher than ever.

The beach was among record numbers in Wales to reach the European guideline standard, which means the water quality is good enough to qualify for the Blue Flag.

A spokesman for the Welsh Assembly Government which issues the statistics, said: "Since Tresaith has previously met all the other requirements for Blue Flag status, such as criteria relating to environmental management, litter, safety and facilities and lost it only on the basis of water quality, it would seem likely that the village could reapply to Keep Wales Tidy and win back the flag for next year." The news was welcomed locally this week.

Cllr Ian ap Dewi told the Tivy-Side: "Obviously I am pleased. I am over the moon. The quality of water does affect the tourist businesses and I am very pleased to see Tresaith meet the top standard again. We must make sure we get the Blue Flag back."

Other local beaches reaching the guideline standards included Aberporth, Llangrannog, Newport north, New Quay and New Quay Harbour and Poppit west.

Carwyn Jones said: "I am extremely happy to announce such very impressive results. For all 80 Welsh designated bathing waters to fully meet the required EC standards for the second year running is a marvellous achievement."
