Rugby - heavy cup defeats

Konica Minolta Welsh Cup Second Round Bonymaen 76 Newcastle Emlyn 0

Bonymaen showed just why they are runaway leaders of Division One in the National League set up as they ran in 11 tries against Newcastle Emlyn to maintain their 100% start to a campaign, which should see them rejoin the `big boys' of Welsh club rugby.

Newcastle Emlyn were on the back foot from the start but never gave up trying, nonetheless, with their pack battling hard in the close exchanges and their backs always trying to keep Bonymaen's speedsters in check, but with difficulty at times.

Bonymaen had No 10 Gareth James in good nick as he sped through for a try and landed a penalty and nine conversions for a personal haul of 26 points. There was a try brace apiece for second row Alan Powell and winger Neil Wilcox, with other tries by centre Paul Smith, No 8 Richard Jones, flankers Chris Jenkins and David Absolom, Australian winger Sione and full back Darrell Wells.

Newcastle Emlyn's young players will have learned a great deal from their experience and now travel to play Hendy this Saturday.

Llanharan 92 Crymych 5 Crymych felt the might of an experienced Llanharan side at the Dairy Field and conceded lots of tries in the process, despite a great deal of defensive labour from Glyndwr Richards' boys.

Richards was quick to praise the efforts of all his players against a team which was recently in the top echelon of Welsh club rugby and used its bulk, pace and power to good effect.

Crymych conceded an early try but drew level after prop Rob Davies had charged down a clearance kick, skipper Gareth Davies chipped the ball over the top and winger Rhodri Thomas won the race to the corner for the touch-down.

But it was all Llanharan thereafter as outside half Craig Jones contributed 28 points and there was a hat-trick for Arwel Davies. There were also two tries each for Dai Atkins, Dean Jenkins, James Phillips and former Whitland star Fakataha Molitika, with others coming from Rhys James and Tom Arnold. To be fair to Crymych, they never gave up trying and they will face a less stern task this Saturday as they travel to Cefneithin for a league fixture.

Fishguard 3 Ammanford 23

Fishguard found Ammanford too strong and street-wise as the visitors marked No 8 forward Darrell Parkin's 500th appearance for the club with a comfortable win.

Parkin is a rare example of real loyalty to a club and he caught the eye alongside half backs Alan Davies and Tristan Evans in controlling play. Ammanford were 9-0 ahead at the break as winger Craig Maloney slotted three penalties - and although Fishguard responded with a Gerwyn Hughes' penalty they were never able to snatch the initiative in John Bonner's first match as coach.

Ammanford claimed tries by outside half Evans and scrum half Davies, both converted by Maloney to run out winners - and Fishguard will play away to New Dock Stars.
