NEW Year Honours have been awarded to former Cardigan mayor Trevor Griffiths and retired psychiatrist Dr John Cule, Capel Dewi, a former High Sheriff of Dyfed.

Trevor Griffiths receives the OBE for services to dentistry. He was chairman of the law and constitution committee of the General Dental Council until he retired from the post last July.

Mr Griffiths, who practised as a dentist in Cardigan from 1974 to 1994, lives in Llangoedmor with his wife Meifis and grown up son Elis.

As chair of the law and constitution committee of the GDC Mr Griffiths became closely involved with GDC policy in a "very busy period of legislative change".

He said: "I was one of a number of dentists working on the scrutiny of legal matters. I am delighted with the honour, of course and my family is very pleased too. It is very nice to be recognised."

Dr John Cule, Abereinon, Capel Dewi, becomes a MBE for services to mental health.

An author of many medical books and papers, he retired in 1986 from St Davids Hospital, Carmarthen, where he had worked as a psychiatrist for 14 years.
