Gales wreak havoc

From the Tivyside Advertiser, first published Tuesday 12th Mar 2002.

The owners of a coastal garden centre and nursery near Cardigan are this week counting the cost of a trail of damage left by a freak gust of wind that wreaked havoc for them at the weekend.

It's estimated by Peter and Lesley Fletcher, of Penrallt Garden Centre, Moylegrove, that repairing the damage caused by the gust during Saturday's severe gale will probably run to more than £7,000.

Peter explained: "The gust that surged straight off the Irish Sea at about 10.45am was quite horrendous and the howling gale was at its height down here for a half-an-hour or so.

"In that time the freak gust lifted a 25 metre long polythene tunnel into the air from its foundations, turned it inside out and smashed it against the 100ft x 30ft glass house next to it."

ï A spokesman at the Met Office at QinetiQ, Aberporth, told the Tivy-Side that the highest gust of wind recorded by them during the weekend's gales was one of 65knots (75mph) registered between 10am and 11am on Saturday.
