Crannog scrape through

From the Tivyside Advertiser, first published Tuesday 12th Mar 2002.

It was a pity there had to be a loser as Crannog scraped into the semi-final of the League Cup after a 2-1 win over division two Pencader.

The Carmarthenshire villagers matched their division one opponents in every department, and with a little more rub of the green could have gone through to a semi-final date with Felinfach this Sunday.

But the Llangrannog men sprang two important goals, and are already being tipped in some quarters to lift the trophy at Aberaeron on Easter Monday.

Both sides made light of gluepot underfoot conditions, and served up a brand of football that was a credit to the competition.

With slope advantage during the first half Crannog mounted a number of dangerous raids, but found goalkeeper Owen Lewis on top of his form.

Leigh Davies with a cracking strike nudged the home side ahead seven minutes before the break, and when Chris Welch fired low past Lewis from 20 yards early in the second period it looked all up for the visitors.

But the Reds raised their game, with Eilian and Ceri Rees causing the Crannog defence problems galore. It was the former who halved the deficit when outjumping the defence at a corner and heading powerfully past Rhydian Morgan.

The visitors had a golden opportunity to draw level when awarded a penalty after Huw 'Banks' Jones was upended. But Ceri Rees' spotkick was turned aside by Morgan, who also denied Eilian Rees with a save right out of the top drawer.
