Although livestock marts are re-opening for business, a leading auctioneer warns that only with farmers' support will marts stay open.
"Without the support of the farmer it will I fear prove quite uneconomical for some marts to continue. The regulations which have come into being since the crisis make the entire operation of marts an entirely different ball game and there can be no cutting corners by any of us," said Malgwyn Evans, consultant to Messrs J J Morris who own and run the marts in Cardigan, Whitland and Lampeter. Increasing and changing legislation has placed a tremendous amount of pressure on livestock auctioneers.
"However, we as auctioneers are determined to re-open our markets to provide the service that has always been there for the farmer.
"Farmers have been crying out for marts to re-open. It is a two-way thing and it is imperative that farmers play their part by supporting the marts."
Cardigan Mart re-opens next Monday, March 4, for dairy stock and calves; with cull cow, beef and sheep collections the following day.
